The Foothill Technology High School boys soccer team celebrated a significant 1-0 victory over Dunn School during their annual senior night on January 29. This win not only marked a memorable farewell for the seniors but also secured a spot in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs for the Dragons.
Match Highlights
The match was rife with tension as both teams struggled to maintain possession in the first half. Despite numerous attempts from Foothill Tech, including corner kicks and through-balls, they were unable to capitalize on their chances. Right wing Gavin Leedy ’26 played a pivotal role, pushing the offense forward and keeping Dunn on the defensive.
In the second half, Foothill Tech continued to press for a goal but faced a resilient Dunn defense. However, in the 75th minute, a breakthrough came when Kenshu Cullen ’28 made a decisive run into the box, drawing a penalty. Senior Ammar Atiah ’26 stepped up to convert the penalty, securing the only goal of the match and igniting cheers from the home crowd.
Players’ Perspectives
After the match, Atiah expressed his excitement about their CIF playoff berth, stating, “I’m excited that we made it to CIF. I mean, our spot is basically solidified.” Leedy echoed the sentiment, saying that while he approaches every game with winning in mind, the intensity surrounding senior night was palpable, highlighting the emotional weight of the win for the team.
Asher Bayless ’26 reflected on the senior night experience, stating, “We were really excited. Good to get a last home game with all the seniors, especially the guys that we’ve been playing with for all four years.” Each senior was honored on the field prior to kickoff, with family and friends present to celebrate their achievements.
Looking Ahead
Following this victory, the Dragons are set to finish third in the Tri-Valley League. Their next challenge will be against Coast Union High School on January 31. Regardless of the outcome, their spot in the CIF playoffs is now secured, marking a successful season for Foothill Tech’s boys soccer team.
