Travel Disruptions Due to Snowstorm
A significant snowstorm impacting Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) has led to numerous travel disruptions at key airports.
Cancellations at Major Airports
At Billy Bishop Airport, all Air Canada flights have been cancelled, and several Porter Airlines flights have also been affected. Meanwhile, Toronto Pearson International Airport is experiencing severe disruptions, with nearly all flights scheduled to depart before 2 p.m. on Thursday delayed.
Extent of Delays
Data from FlightAware indicates that flight delays at Pearson are among the worst in the world, with outgoing flights delayed on average by 40 minutes. Inbound flights are facing even longer delays, averaging over two hours and 40 minutes due to challenging weather conditions.
Snow Accumulation and Maintenance Efforts
As of noon, a total of 18 centimetres of snow had accumulated at Toronto Pearson. The airport reported that its maintenance specialists have been actively working to keep critical areas of the airfield clear using advanced snowplows.
Advice for Travelers
Air Canada has reported that winter weather conditions are also causing delays in other cities, including Montreal, Quebec City, and Ottawa. Passengers are strongly encouraged to check the status of their flights for any updates regarding delays or cancellations before heading to the airports.
The current largest one-day snowfall record for this season at Toronto Pearson, previously set on December 26, was 12 centimetres, now surpassed by today’s total.
