The Guthrie Athlete of the Week voting is now open for athletes who excelled from January 18 to January 24, 2026. Eight talented nominees have been chosen from various local schools across the region.

Nominees for Athlete of the Week

  • Strati Anastos, Maine-Endwell boys swimming: Anastos showcased his remarkable talents by topping the New York state standard in the 50-yard freestyle (21.89) and 100 freestyle (48.01), leading the Spartans to the team title at the Maine-Endwell Blizzard Invitational.
  • Maverick Beckwith, Norwich boys wrestling: Beckwith captured his fourth Southern Tier Athletic Conference title, achieving an impressive win at 150 pounds that included two technical falls and a pin.
  • Alex Bierworth, Union-Endicott boys swimming: Bierworth clinched victories in the 200 and 500 freestyles at the Maine-Endwell Blizzard Invitational, with his 200 time of 1:47.25 re-qualifying for the state meet and his 500 result of 4:53.09 marking a personal best.
  • Marco Konrad, Maine-Endwell boys basketball: Konrad scored 22 points, including three free throws in the final moments, propelling M-E to a 57-56 victory over Sitka, Alaska, at the Alaska Airlines Classic. He also scored 20 and 27 points in subsequent games against East Anchorage and West Valley, respectively.
  • Declan McKee, Tioga Central boys wrestling: McKee was dominant in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference Championships, winning the 110-pound title with two first-minute pins and a major decision while also contributing in the Section 4 Division II Dual Meet Tournament.
  • Max O’Connor, Elmira Notre Dame boys basketball: O’Connor led the Crusaders to a 77-70 victory over Watkins Glen with an outstanding performance, scoring 28 points and hitting four 3-pointers.
  • Jude Santos, Watkins Glen boys basketball: Santos had a standout week, scoring 27 points with 12 rebounds in a win against Lansing and followed with 23 points and nine rebounds in a loss to Notre Dame.
  • Rachel Vickio, Watkins Glen girls basketball: Vickio had a stellar performance, scoring 22 points with four 3-pointers against Lansing and 21 points with an additional three 3-pointers in a victory over Notre Dame.

Voting Details

Fans can cast their votes for the Athlete of the Week until noon on Thursday, January 29. This event highlights the remarkable talents and achievements of local athletes, encouraging community support and recognition.

Nominations for Next Week

To submit a nomination for the following week (January 25-31), send an email to bgmsports@gannett.com by 6 p.m. on January 31. Make sure to include detailed information on the athlete’s achievements for the week.
