Ukrainian designer Elvira Gasanova recently shared insights into her creative partnerships with notable figures, including boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk and renowned poetess Lina Kostenko. Her collaboration with Usyk involved designing a unique Cossack-inspired look for his boxing performances.
Collaboration with Oleksandr Usyk
Gasanova recounted how she first met Usyk through a mutual friend who recommended her services for a special gift. This encounter marked the beginning of their collaboration, as Gasanova crafted a luxurious sheepskin coat for one of Usyk’s acquaintances. Following this, she designed a tuxedo for the boxer, which paved the way for a more ambitious request.
Usyk approached Gasanova with a desire for a striking Cossack outfit for his performance. He provided her with a Pinterest image depicting a theatrical costume, from which Gasanova drew inspiration. She emphasized the importance of creating a stylish rendition that aligned with her brand while satisfying Usyk’s vision.
“I want to be in the style of a Cossack,” Usyk informed Gasanova. She noted, “Can I change it to be stylish? Because, you know, it’s not just about doing what he wanted. It’s about communicating later and saying that I did it, and I’m proud.”
Ultimately, Gasanova developed a striking image that resonated with boxing fans worldwide, although not all her ideas were embraced. For instance, the boxer declined a costume design featuring stones.
Working with Lina Kostenko
In addition to working with Usyk, Gasanova’s collaboration with Lina Kostenko reflects her commitment to intertwining culture and fashion. She sought a figure to represent her brand-a symbolic person embodying Ukrainian heritage and legacy. Through her efforts, Gasanova reached out to Kostenko’s daughter, who initially expressed concerns about her mother’s participation in brand events.
However, a personal meeting shifted the dynamic. After closer interactions, Kostenko agreed to represent the brand. Gasanova described the recording session as unexpectedly fruitful. Initially planned as a brief appearance, it evolved into an engaging experience as Kostenko resonated with the project.
“We came with the team, even took a make-up artist with us. I hoped it would be just 10 minutes, but she liked it so much that we kept recording and recording,” Gasanova shared.
Impact and Importance
These collaborations highlight Gasanova’s ability to blend traditional Ukrainian elements with contemporary fashion, attracting both local and international attention. Her designs not only serve as a visual spectacle but also carry cultural significance, further enhancing the representation of Ukraine in various spheres.
As Gasanova continues her journey, her partnership with Usyk and Kostenko will likely inspire future projects that bridge art, culture, and fashion, maintaining a dialogue that resonates with her audience.
