Missing Hikers Found in Avalanche in Vardousia Mountains, Greece
On December 25, four hikers who went missing in the Vardousia Mountains of central Greece have been found dead after being caught in an avalanche. The individuals included three men and one woman, whose bodies were located on Friday evening following a comprehensive search.
Fire service teams discovered the bodies partially buried in snow on a steep slope near Korakas peak, at an elevation of around 2,000 meters (6,561 feet). Reports indicate that the group was overwhelmed by an avalanche during their hike.
Initially, the hikers began their ascent in favorable weather, but conditions deteriorated quickly due to the mountainous terrain and altitude. A friend of the three men raised the alarm when they did not return at the expected time.
The weather conditions during the search were reported as challenging, with low temperatures and poor visibility affecting the operation of drones and helicopters.
Recovery efforts were ongoing, with some bodies being airlifted by helicopter while others were planned to be transported to a nearby plateau for retrieval using a winch. The site of the accident was remote, approximately three hours away from the village of Athanasios Diakos.
The head of the Hellenic Rescue Team at the location noted that if helicopter access was not feasible, teams would proceed on foot with the help of firefighters and mountain guides.
