Young Salmon Spotted Returning to English Rivers
Recent sightings of young salmon in three English rivers-Mersey, Goyt, and Bollin-mark a notable environmental development. Once considered critically endangered in Britain, these salmon have been found spawning in areas where they were previously absent, signaling a positive shift in river health.
The resurgence of these fish is being described as a “significant environmental turnaround.” In the past, large sections of these rivers were biologically dead, particularly in the 1980s. However, they have since transformed, now supporting thriving ecosystems, including pollution-intolerant fish species.
Mark Sewell, a wastewater catchment manager at United Utilities, highlighted the recovery of these rivers, noting their newfound biodiversity. He noted, “Those species are recovering thanks to a significant environmental turnaround.”
Since 2006, Atlantic salmon populations have generally declined by 40% across the island, with some rivers losing them entirely. After spending 2 to 3 years in the Arctic waters, young salmon typically return to their home rivers to spawn on gravel beds. However, many of these beds are currently inaccessible due to obstacles like locks and dams.
The Mersey River, which flows through Liverpool, is now recognized for its high levels of biodiversity. Recent studies have identified approximately 37 species of fish inhabiting the river, alongside large eels, sea scorpions, and even five types of sharks. In 2009, the Mersey was noted for being cleaner than it had been since the Industrial Revolution.
This positive trend has led to the expectation that returning salmon will inspire efforts to improve water quality in other English rivers that once hosted these fish. The presence of young salmon is not just a sign of environmental recovery but also reflects the ongoing commitment to restoring aquatic ecosystems in the region.
