Tree Clearance Efforts in Telford and Wrekin Post-Storm Goretti
Telford & Wrekin Council teams are actively engaged in extensive tree clearance operations following Storm Goretti, one of the most severe winter storms experienced in recent years. With the current weather impacting safety, efforts are underway to address dangerous tree conditions across the borough.
Extent of Damage Reported
Since the storm, the council has received over 400 reports related to fallen or hazardous trees, with this number anticipated to exceed 500. Many of these reports involve multiple trees, highlighting the scale of the damage inflicted by the storm. In response, additional teams have been deployed to ensure urgent safety work is conducted on affected roads and throughout the borough.
Emergency Measures Implemented
To protect crews working in hazardous conditions, emergency overnight lane closures have been put in place on high-speed routes such as the A442 and A4169. This proactive measure aims to minimize disruption during the day while prioritizing the safety of both the workers and the public.
Community Involvement and Ongoing Efforts
Councillor Carolyn Healy, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Planning and Sustainability, expressed pride in the council’s quick response. She stated, “This response shows our commitment to keeping the borough safe. We are also grateful to residents for reporting issues and showing patience.” She emphasized that it would take time to tackle the growing list of reports due to the complexity of the situations, many involving multiple trees.
Residents are encouraged to report any fallen trees they encounter rather than assuming someone else has done so. The community’s reports are instrumental in helping the Council respond promptly and ensure safe roads and footpaths. To report fallen trees, residents can visit the council’s dedicated webpage or for emergency situations outside of business hours, they can call the provided hotline.
Looking Ahead
With additional support teams now joining the council’s crews, the focus is on prioritizing major highways and critical routes. Initial clearances are being conducted to ensure that roads are safe, followed by further work to fully fell and chip the remaining trees. Continuous efforts will be made overnight to keep the essential services running efficiently and safely.
