Welsh Singer’s Celebrity Encounter

Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins has shared a humorous account of her unexpected encounter with Hollywood actor Tom Cruise, who mistook her for a member of the Royal Family during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Concert in 2022.

Unexpected Meeting

The memorable moment occurred backstage when Jenkins, a well-known performer for the Royal Family, crossed paths with Cruise. She recounted how the actor was “almost body-slammed” against the wall by armed forces personnel as they navigated a narrow corridor. This amusing incident took place shortly after Jenkins completed her performance at the royal event.

In her conversation with The Independent, Jenkins elaborated on the scene: “Tom was walking off, being escorted on either side by military personnel. Because I do so much with the military, they knew me. They both bowed their heads and said ‘good evening ma’am,’ at which point, because there wasn’t space, one of them pushed Tom out of my way and almost body-slammed him against the wall.” This quirky encounter led Jenkins to perceive that Cruise might have thought she was royalty due to the respect shown by the military.

Diplomatic Gesture

When Jenkins and Cruise came face-to-face again, Jenkins described his gesture as a “very strange handshake/nod/bow thing,” which further reinforced her idea of mistaken identity. She reflected on the experience as one of her most memorable celebrity encounters, highlighting the humor and unexpected nature of such meetings in the celebrity world.

Background on Katherine Jenkins

Katherine Jenkins is renowned as the UK’s best-selling classical music star and has performed frequently for the Royal Family. Following her fifth appearance at the Royal Variety Performance in November 2025, Jenkins expressed her pride in performing for the Prince and Princess of Wales, stating it was a “huge honour.”

Additionally, Jenkins serves as a trustee of the British Forces Foundation, with King Charles as its patron, and has collaborated with charities associated with the royal family. Reflecting on her OBE ceremony, Jenkins remarked on the warmth of receiving the honor from the King, enhancing her connection to the royal family.

With a solid academic foundation, Jenkins was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music at age 17 and subsequently secured a six-album record deal at 22. Her contributions to classical music and public performances at sporting events like rugby games have made her a household name not just in Wales but across the UK.

Jenkins divides her time between New York and London, where she lives with her husband, painter Andrew Levitas, and their two children.
