‘Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ Cast Guide: Meet the Stars

This year is going to be fantastic for fans of the Hunger Games series! The film The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is on its way, and it’s directed by the talented Francis Lawrence, bringing excitement back to the franchise for the first time since The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.

Although this is the latest film in the series, it transports us back in time long before we met Katniss Everdeen-played by Jennifer Lawrence. This prequel dives deep into Haymitch Abernathy’s backstory, brought to life by Woody Harrelson in the earlier films, while exploring the harrowing events of the 50th Hunger Games, famously known as the Second Quarter Quell.

“Haymitch has always been a fan favorite, and his origin story is one of the most anticipated in the franchise,” remarked Erin Westerman, co-president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, in a recent press release. “We can’t wait for fans to experience the story that shaped one of the most compelling characters in the series.”

Leading the cast is Joseph Zada, who steps into the role of young Haymitch. The movie features a blend of emerging talents and familiar faces, with both Jennifer and Josh set to return as Katniss and Peeta, respectively, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen

Though she won’t have a major role, her presence is sure to be a highlight for fans of the series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jennifer will appear as Katniss in a “flash-forward scene,” likely hinting at an epilogue where she connects with Haymitch and Peeta as they grow older.

Josh Hutcherson

Also returning is THR‘s confirmation that Josh will reprise his role as Peeta during the same “flash-forward scene.” He kept his involvement under wraps while promoting his other projects, adding a layer of surprise for fans.

Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy

The role of young Haymitch Abernathy will be played by Australian actor Zada, who represents District 12’s male tribute during the 50th Hunger Games. Zada has appeared in several Australian productions, like Invisible Boys and Total Control, and will also feature in upcoming series We Were Liars and East of Eden alongside Florence Pugh.

Finding a younger version of such an iconic character isn’t easy. In a March 2025 interview with Variety, producer Nina Jacobson expressed the challenge of selecting someone who could authentically capture Haymitch’s essence without mimicking Harrelson’s performance.

“Nobody can be Woody Harrelson but Woody Harrelson,” she noted. “You don’t want somebody who’s impersonating Woody, but you want someone who can genuinely convey the essence of this character before the trauma and anguish that the Games cause.”

Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird

Whitney Peak takes on the role of Lenore Dove Baird, Haymitch’s girlfriend and a member of the Covey, a musical group hailing from District 12. She’s known for her performances in the Gossip Girl reboot and Hocus Pocus 2.

Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner

Mckenna Grace portrays Maysilee Donner, another District 12 tribute who becomes an ally to Haymitch during the Games. At only 19, Grace has already distinguished herself with roles in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Young Sheldon.

Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee

Jesse Plemons joins the cast as Plutarch Heavensbee, a key figure in the Capitol whose influence will become significant for Panem’s future. Famous for his work in The Power of the Dog, Breaking Bad, and Fargo, he’s regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation.

“Jesse is one of the most talented actors of his generation, with a proven record of picking his roles selectively,” said Erin Westerman from Lionsgate. “We are thrilled he has chosen to bring his own interpretation to one of Panem’s most intriguing characters, especially given his prior collaboration with Philip Seymour Hoffman, adding an extra touch of nostalgia as we present a Plutarch that fans can recognize while also feeling fresh and unique. Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket

Elle Fanning takes on the younger role of Effie Trinket, the unforgettable character known for her catchphrase, “May the Odds Be Ever in Your Favor.” Fanning has been involved in various projects, including A Complete Unknown, The Girl From Plainville, and Maleficent.

Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman

Initially portrayed by Stanley Tucci, Caesar Flickerman will be brought to life 24 years earlier than when we first encountered him in The Hunger Games. Kieran Culkin is set to embody the lively and charming game show host who introduces the tributes before their fateful battles. Recently, he’s gathered acclaim for his performances in Succession and A Real Pain, which earned him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Billy Porter as Lucretius “Lucky” Flickerman

Before Caesar Flickerman captured audiences’ hearts, there was Lucretius “Lucky” Flickerman-his flamboyant predecessor. In Sunrise on the Reaping, Lucky takes center stage as the Capitol’s original hunger games host, showcasing the twisted spectacle for the very first time.

Lucky’s character will be played by Billy Porter, whose dynamic stage presence and sharp wit make him a perfect fit for the spotlight. He’s well-known for his Emmy-winning role in Pose, in addition to his trailblazing performances on Broadway and at various red carpet events.

Glenn Close as Casca Highbottom
