A store-bought bookshelf in the $80 to $150 range is made from particleboard with a veneer surface, it looks like wood but weighs twice as much and loses structural integrity the first time it gets wet. A plywood bookshelf built from a single sheet of 3/4-inch birch plywood costs $45 to $65 in materials, is stronger, lighter, and can be painted or stained to match any room.

The Cut List From One Sheet of Plywood

A single 4×8 sheet of 3/4-inch birch plywood yields all the pieces for a standard 36-inch wide, 72-inch tall bookshelf with 4 adjustable shelves. Have the lumber yard make the rip cuts, long cuts down the length of the sheet, which most stores do for $1 to $2 per cut and saves significant time and effort. From a 48-inch wide sheet cut to 12 inches deep, cross-cut at home with a circular saw: two side panels at 72 inches, one top panel at 34.5 inches, one bottom panel at 34.5 inches, and four shelf panels at 34.5 inches.

Assembly Sequence

Attach the top and bottom panels between the two side panels first, this creates the outer frame. Use 1.5-inch wood screws with wood glue at every joint. Pre-drill pilot holes to prevent splitting. Check for square by measuring diagonally corner to corner both ways, equal diagonal measurements mean it is square. Install the back panel from a 1/4-inch sheet of plywood or hardboard using finishing nails, which locks the frame in square permanently.

For adjustable shelves, drill a row of 1/4-inch holes spaced 1.5 inches apart inside both side panels at the same heights. Shelf pin clips insert into these holes to support the shelves at any height. Finish with two coats of paint in the colors of your choice or stain and polyurethane for a natural wood look.
